There is little official information so far, but BMW says the car will be lighter and more powerful than a standard M3. That means a curb weight below 3700 pounds, and power outputs that reach above the standard M3’s 414 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. At this stage, it’s unknown if the car will also include any suspension or brake upgrades.
The concept is said to split the difference between the standard, 414-horsepower M3 and the Europe-only, 444-horsepower M3 GTS. For those who don’t commit BMW specs to memory, the GTS is a hardcore track car, with a roll cage in place of the rear seats, no climate control or sound system, adjustable suspension, and stronger brakes. It’s powered by an enlarged, 4.4-liter version of the M3’s V-8 that produces 444 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. The mostly hand-built car tips the scales at just 3370 pounds, versus about 3700 for a standard car.
The car is scheduled to debut at the Nurburgring race this June, at which time we should receive more information on if and when the car will enter production. The M3 GTS is confined to the European market, and BMW spokesman Dave Buchko confirmed to us that the lightweight model also will not be sold in the U.S
